Mathematical Thinking for Instruction (MTI) courses

The Initiative for Developing Mathematical Thinking (IDMT) is committed to enhancing student achievement in mathematics by offering professional development for elementary and middle-school teachers. It is our view that all students can succeed in mathematics and that teachers have perhaps the most significant impact on student learning. Therefore, we work to ensure all of our project teachers have a thorough knowledge of mathematical content, effective instructional practices, and progressions of student learning.

The MTI course is built upon social and constructivist learning theories, which hold that students need to learn mathematics by constructing knowledge through meaningful classroom activities and discussion. It focuses on building connections between informal understanding and the formal knowledge of mathematics that develops over time. The course is divided into three grade-bands: K-3, 4-8, and 6-12.

The Mathematics Consulting Teacher Endorsement (MCTE) is intended for individuals who want to develop the professional skills and knowledge to successfully work with teachers and students in developing mathematical understanding.
